It's been a long eight months.
With the apparent failure and disappearance ofSoma Cruz Dracula's reincarnation, the deceased Dark Lord's castle was left leaking unadulterated semi-lovecraftian chaos out into the world. Monster attacks on humans are at a high not seen since 15th century Wallachia. Japan in particular is having a very bad year.
The one mercy in all this mess? The castle itself remains sealed within the darkness of a solar eclipse, unreachable until the time of the next one - later canon points out that a partial eclipse is enough to make the castle manifest in a form that can be entered, and there's a partial eclipse over northern Europe in mid-2036. They'll make this right, one way or another. Genya Arikado may not have faith left in much, but he has faith in Soma Cruz.
Given the chance to retrieve Soma alive and hopefully mostly unharmed, Arikado followed without a second thought. There'll be plenty of time for second thoughts later, when they get back, and the Belmont is furious at him for not dragging him along.
As to who this man in black is? For once, the fandom's wiki is sort of useful.
and yes if you're here wondering about some of the icons this is being used for a PSL that necessitates some of them, it's 2018, let's just live and let live, yeah?
